Forge FC goes into the World Cup break top of the CPL table after a 1-0 victory over the Halifax Wanderers on Wednesday night at Hamilton Stadium. Brian Wright's second-half winner made it seven straight victories for Forge against Halifax in all competitions. With the clean sheet, they extended their home record to an incredible seven matches in all competitions without allowing a goal. Forge FC gave 17-year-old midfielder Aghilas Sadek his first professional start, while bringing back Wright into the starting lineup to lead the line. Halifax made three changes to Saturday's lineup in Calgary, adding in Francesco Troisi, Tavio Ciccarelli and Lucas Olguin. The hosts had a few early chances, the best came in the 19th minute when Hoce Massunda found himself one-on-one in the box after a great ball forward from Marko Jevremović. But his shot was blocked wide of the target. Halifax had a couple of half-chances in transition, but couldn't quite get their execution right in the final third in order to turn them into anything that challenged Dimitry Bertaud in the Forge net. Forge looked more and more dangerous as the half wore on, with Ben Paton flashing a pair of strikes from distance just over the net. Forge had one last chance in first-half stoppage time, as Tristan Borges swung in a dangerous free kick that Marco Carducci parried away -- before comfortably collecting the rebound. The hosts were forced to make a change at the half, bringing off Jevremović, who pulled up late in the half with injury, for Maxime Bourgeois. Halifax had an early penalty appeal as Isaiah Johnston looked to be pulled down in the box, but after an FVS review, it was waved away by the referee. Minutes later, however, the hosts had the lead. Carducci couldn't quite control Massunda's strike from distance, and Wright potted the rebound. Under the CPL's daylight offside rule trial, the goal stood as Wright was a step in front of the second-to-last Halifax defender, but part of his body was still in line with him. Shortly after the goal, Forge brought off Wright and essentially replaced their front three, subbing in Nana Ampomah, Noah Jensen and Max Filion. Shortly after coming on, Filion nutmegged his man down the sideline and created a great chance for Ampomah, but he got his shape all wrong and sent the ball over the bar. Halifax made a late push, knowing that a single goal would earn them a massive road point. In stoppage time, a wide free kick from Lorenzo Callegari looped over Bertaud and struck the crossbar. But, otherwise, as they have all season, Forge defended brilliantly. The Hamilton club now have seven clean sheets on the season already through 10 matches. The single-season CPL record, set by Forge last season, is 13.
